Homeopathy can work beautifully for teething, but finding the correct remedy can be challenging. Before selecting a remedy, the parent or homeopath must observe the infant’s behavior. The concomitant symptoms of the baby, including perspiration, fever, or stool, also help with remedy selection.

Hylands used to sell teething tablets formulated with several homeopathic remedies but voluntarily removed that product from the market due to pressure from the FDA.

Combination remedies are available for teething, but I will not recommend them because that is not homeopathy. Instead, I will inform you how to select the correct homeopathic remedy by observing the symptoms. One of the homeopathic principles is to give one remedy at a time and observe the effects so you can follow the minimum dose rule.

Chamomilla 30c
Chamomilla 30c is the most common remedy for a teething infant, and the symptoms can look similar to the Belladonna picture. This baby is irritable, impatient, and capricious. The baby will want a toy but throw it down when given it. The baby will want to be carried but squirm and cry when picked up. The teething may be accompanied by tugging on the ears and interfere with sleep.

Unique symptoms you may observe in a baby who would benefit from Chamomilla 30c:

  • One cheek is red/hot, the other cold and pale (Morrison, 1998)
  • Green poop that smells like rotten eggs (Morrison, 1998)

Those symptoms don’t have to be present to choose Chamomilla 30c. But if these characteristic symptoms are present, you will be confident you selected a good remedy.

Belladonna 30c
If a teething baby needs Belladonna 30c, you will know it. The themes of a Belladonna picture are HOT, ANGRY, and PULSATING. The baby may have a red face, fever, or inflammation of the gums. (Note: Belladonna 30c is an energetic dose of Belladonna; none of the original substance remains in a 30c potency).

Calc carb 30c
The baby who would benefit from Calc carb 30c will be mellow. Calc carb babies are referred to as Buddha babies because they have rolls of fat and like to stay in one place. (A Calc carb toddler will sit and play happily in one spot for a while).

One may not notice difficulty with teething for this baby, but the teeth will come in late and slowly. The clues for this remedy are delayed teething and sour-smelling perspiration on the head.

Calc phos 30c
A baby who may need Calc phos 6x will be skinny and develop slowly. Calc phos 6x is a low-potency alternative.)

Not all babies will have difficulty with teething. Carefully observe the symptoms before choosing a remedy. The baby might be uncomfortable because of a different cause, such as colic, ear infections, or an acute illness.
