HOMEMADE ELDERBERRY SYRUP

I was curious to see if there is any proof Elderberry Syrup can prevent or shorten the duration of illness.  I searched the scientific literature for controlled studies and found a few that support the claims of “old wives’ tales.”

In one study, patients who received 15 ml of elderberry syrup four times a day were better, on average, four days sooner than a placebo.

Apple Squash Leather

Squash is an inexpensive vegetable that is easy to grow. During the fall season, I often find myself with a lot of squash, and I like to look for other ways of using it besides roasting it.

This fruit leather was easy to make, and since it is dehydrated, it will last a long time, longer than the squash would last on my kitchen countertop.

WATER KEFIR

Making water kefir is very easy. If you feed the grains regularly, they will stay alive for months or years. Kefir grains are a type of SCOBY(symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast). They are probiotic organisms (aka the good bacteria and yeast). I do not know what the CFU (colony forming unit) is in a glass of water kefir, but it IS a healthy alternative to soda or juice that tastes good

GOAT MILK KEFIR

Kefir contains probiotics as well as many vitamins that are made bio-available by the fermentation process. Lacto-fermented foods are an inexpensive way to obtain probiotics. (Good quality probiotics can be expensive, especially if you have a large family). Kefir is also the easiest fermented food to make; the hardest part is finding goat milk!
